Gulf Leaders Voice Concern Over Iran Nuclear Threat
During a press conference in Abu Dhabi following talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Merz disclosed that every Gulf official he engaged with cited profound anxiety over Iran's proximity and nuclear trajectory.
The German leader outlined ongoing international efforts aimed at curbing Tehran's activities, stating: "Intensive diplomatic contacts are underway to persuade Iran to cease violence against its own people, end its nuclear program, and return to the negotiating table, where peace and stability throughout the region will be negotiated."
Merz revealed that Gulf state leaders are coordinating intensively with the Trump administration to establish diplomatic channels and defuse mounting Middle Eastern hostilities through peaceful means.
"My conversation partners in Riyadh, Doha, and here in Abu Dhabi today are all working very hard, together with the US, to bring the regime in Tehran to its senses and, above all, to return to the negotiating table. The concern is very, very high," he said.
The Chancellor's Abu Dhabi stop concluded a three-nation Gulf tour Friday that included previous diplomatic engagements in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Merz's comments emerged as Oman orchestrated indirect US-Iran discussions Friday focused on reviving nuclear program negotiations.
