Trump weights possibility of ordering new strikes against Iran

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering ordering new military strikes against Iran in response to the country’s crackdown on protests sparked by rising inflation.

Trump has been briefed on multiple options in recent days, including potential attacks on non-military targets in Tehran, though no final decision has been made. The president has issued repeated threats toward Iran in the past and expressed public support for protesters.

“Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

The unrest in Iran began on December 28 after the national currency collapsed, causing steep increases in the prices of food and other essential goods. Demonstrations quickly escalated, with clashes between rioters and police and attacks on government institutions in Tehran and other cities. Authorities shut down internet and phone services nationwide in an effort to contain the violence.

Tehran has accused the US and Israel of exacerbating the unrest. “Believing that the Islamic Republic of Iran is like other countries, the US is pursuing the same measures by encouraging certain individuals to create chaos and riots,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei dismissed the threats as “baseless,” asserting that the country “will not back down against vandals.”

The US previously carried out strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities in June 2025 during Israel’s 12-day air campaign against the country. Tehran retaliated with a missile attack on a US base in Qatar, which caused no casualties.
