Trump weighs possible strikes on Iran over protest crackdown
Trump has been briefed on multiple strike options, including potential attacks on non-military targets in Tehran, though no final decision has been made. The president has previously issued threats against Iran and voiced support for protesters, writing on his Truth Social platform: “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!”
The unrest in Iran began on December 28 after a sharp devaluation of the national currency triggered significant increases in food and staple prices. Demonstrations quickly escalated, with rioters clashing with police and targeting government institutions in Tehran and other cities. Authorities cut internet and phone services nationwide to contain the violence.
Tehran has accused the US and Israel of encouraging the unrest. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the US is “pursuing the same measures by encouraging certain individuals to create chaos and riots.” Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei called the threats “baseless” and affirmed that Iran “will not back down against vandals.”
The US previously struck Iran’s nuclear facilities in June 2025 in support of Israel’s 12-day air campaign, prompting Tehran to retaliate with missile attacks on a US base in Qatar, which caused no casualties.
